Zenith KS — Knee & Shoulder

Asked in clinic

How long before I can drive?

The short answer

The calendar gives us a guide. Your ability to perform an emergency stop matters more.

01 The reasoning

Driving is often the first practical milestone patients ask about.

And rightly so.

You are generally ready to drive when you can safely control the vehicle and perform an emergency stop without significant pain, hesitation or restricted movement, and when you are not taking medication that could impair your ability to drive.

What affects the timing?

Which leg?

A right knee generally matters more for braking and accelerator control.

A manual transmission can also place greater demands on the operated leg than an automatic.

Which operation?

A protected repair in a brace will have different restrictions from a procedure that allows early weight-bearing.

Are you still in a brace or sling?

If your movement or control is restricted, you may not be ready to drive even if a certain number of weeks has passed.

Your own insurer and local requirements

It is sensible to check your insurance conditions and follow the relevant legal requirements before returning to driving.

What we will give you

We will give you an expected milestone as part of your recovery plan.

But if that date arrives and you still cannot perform an emergency stop confidently, the date does not override the knee.

Tell us.

That is not a failed recovery. It is information we need.

09 Appointments

Book a consultation.

Bring your previous reports and imaging if you have them. If you are unsure whether your problem needs a surgeon at all, that is a reasonable question to arrive with.

Message us and you will hear back by the next working day.
